Selena Gomez – “Overachiever”
28
February
2011

Selena Gomez might be a bit of an overachiever — though her fans probably don’t mind at all.

The 18-year-old actor/singer keeps adding more “slashes” to her title — singer/entrepreneur and actor/charity spokesperson.

Best known for her role as Alex Russo in the popular Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez will be returning for a fourth season.

Recently, Gomez and her band The Scene released their second album A Year Without Rain, and they’ve been on tour to promote it. Less than six months after the band’s sophomore release, Gomez’s label announced a new single, “Who Says.” The song will debut on Ryan Seacrest’s “On Air” morning radio show in March. The upcoming album that has yet to be titled is scheduled to drop in June.

Gomez keeps herself busy with project after project, including her own clothing line, films and serving as a UNICEF ambassador.

The teen queen paired up with K-Mart and a couple of fashion designers to come up with Dream Out Loud, a collection which debuted last summer.

She’ll star alongside Leighton Meester (Gossip Girls) in the upcoming comedy Monte Carlo, which is slated for release in July.

As an ambassador for UNICEF, Gomez has raised money and awareness for several of their programs, including Trick-Or-Treat, which encourages children to carry an orange box door-to-door during Halloween to collect donations for the organization.

“It’s Really Toxic What they do to Girls in This Industry”

Last week, after the news broke that Disney star Demi Lovato checked herself into an in-patient rehab facility for emotional and physical issues, the star’s father, Patrick Lovato told Radaronline that the pressures of Hollywood led to Demi’s breakdown: “There are a lot of pressures. That is one of the things I worried about when she signed with Disney,” he said.

It reminded us about a conversation we had with Lovato’s one-time BFF Selena Gomez back in July. When we asked Gomez about the rumors floating around that she and Demi were feuding, she responded. “You can’t care [about stuff like that],” said Gomez, who assured us that she and Demi were still friends. It’s really toxic what they do to girls in the industry.”

Gomez vented her frustration about rumors and reports being directed mainly at young girls in Hollywood.  “You never really see it with guys,” she said. “So you have to not care. Which I think is really good and positive for both of us.”

It’s tough for someone to be young, female and famous, and Selena has her own opinions about how other stars have grown up in the industry. “I think that’s all about how they see their career,” Selena said, without judgment. “I don’t think it’s necessarily wrong what other people are doing, it’s just what they want to do. And there should be nothing wrong with that. Everybody’s different. All you can do is go for it and do the best that you can.”

Selena Gomez Talks “Glee,” Britney, And “A Year Without Rain”

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – Selena Gomez is only 18 years old and she just released her second album of both Radio Disney and club-ready hits, “A Year Without Rain,” which sees her taking the dance sound she adopted on platinum single “Naturally” and keeping the pulse going for 10 new tracks.

On “A Year Without Rain,” Selena Gomez & the Scene sees the Scene’s guitars and drums taking a backseat to electronic beats and synths, as the new album explores more of the electronic pop sound which shot “Naturally” to the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. The first two singles, “Round & Round” and the title track, have already gone Top 40 and are still climbing.

The album sees her re-teaming with “Naturally” hitmakers Rock Mafia, who helped Miley Cyrus grow up on her “Can’t Be Tamed “album, and gets production help from “Let It Rock” singer Kevin Rudolf, Beyonce and Fergie collaborator Toby Gad, and even Lady Gaga’s own RedOne. Katy Perry also contributes a self-penned track and backing vocals to album track “Rock God.”

But Selena Gomez is a Disney star, which means she’s not just a singer. Along with touring and promoting the new album, she’s also finishing up her last season of her hit show “Wizards of Waverly Place” and filmed the upcoming movie “Monte Carlo.” She also has an organic clothing line and is a UNICEF ambassador. Make you feel bad about what you were doing at 18? What if I told you her music, especially current single “A Year Without Rain,” is actually good?

Somehow finding time in her busy schedule (or she also manages time and space), Selena Gomez talked to AHN about her new album, being #1 on the club scene without ever stepping into one, and loving Britney and “Glee.”

AHN: So your album just came out and you’ve been on every talk show and radio show. What is a Selena Gomez album release week like?

Selena Gomez: It’s definitely a whirlwind. We come to New York and we get to do all the shows, and we do performances and acoustic sets, and basically talk about my album repeatedly over and over again (laughing). Then we go to the UK next week and do it all again.
